Year 8 Science Challenge Day

To celebrate the opening of National Science Week, students from Secondary Schools across the Borough have attended a Year 8 Science Challenge Day.

The event, in its forth year and hosted by last year’s winners Lammas School, saw representatives from each school competing in a range of activities and challenges, designed to increase awareness of Science Week and enjoyment of Science practical work.

Pupils were set a range of timed Science based challenges, testing both their practical and written skills as well as encouraging teamwork and joint effort.

The event was visited by Leader of Waltham Forest Council Cllr Chris Robbins who praised the enthusiasm of the pupils and the friendly atmosphere of the day. He said that events such as this are important as not only are they enjoyable for the students they also allow pupils to recognise their individual skills and bring these out as part of team.

Once the results of the each of the challenges were in, Lammas were announced as the overall winners and will host the day again next year.

Matthew Endean, Science Consultant Babcock and organiser of the event said “It was great to see the enthusiasm of the pupils to the challenges set and the teamwork that has been displayed. There is a great deal of talent amongst pupils in the Borough and today offered the chance to get our students working together and using their skills in a fun yet competitive way. The Challenge Day aims at encouraging pupils to enjoy Science and practical activities and in this sense today has been a great success”
