A special event aimed at inspiring young girls in their careers choices has taken place at Frederick Bremer. Six successful women from a range of different industries and professions visited the school’s Year 9 and 10 female students to offer career advice and inspiration, with the aim of opening their eyes to the many possibilities open to women in the world of work.
Those attending included Foreign Office Diplomat, Nagheena Akhtar, local Choclatier, Kirsty Joly, Architect Andrea Fees, Medical Director Dr Terry Loong, Kemi Laniyan, founder of ‘Corporate Homes’ and Jo Behari founder of professional handywomen company ‘Home Jane’.
Each of the women spoke about their own experiences in the workplace and gave advice to students regarding choosing which career path to take and how they got into the industries they work in now. The students were also given the chance to ask any questions that they had and to discuss and gain insight in to the things that they were most interested in.
Scott Vickers, Employer Engagement Officer, Babcock who organised the event said "Today’s event was a great success as it gave the students a first hand insight into the world of work and got them thinking about career options that they may never have felt were open to them before. The overall message of the day was that the girls should aim to reach their full potential and believe that anything is possible when it comes to their future career and by showing clear evidence of this through the women who visited today is a very effective way of putting this message across.”
