Overseas Trained Teachers
If you are an overseas trained teacher already working in Waltham Forest, you will be eligible to join the induction training programme which we run for our Newly Qualified Teachers.
For all other queries regarding overseas qualifications and eligibility to teach in the UK, check the Training and Devlopment Agency for schools (TDA): www.tda.gov.uk
Outside the EEA
Overseas trained teachers can only work for a maximum of four years in the UK without Qualified Teacher Status.
Teaching qualifications gained outside the EEA do not automatically lead to the award of QTS. Non-EEA trained teachers will need to undertake some form of training before they can be granted QTS. However, they can present themselves for assessment against the QTS standards without necessarily completing further training. Those with at least 2 years full-time teaching experience may at the same time present themselves for assessment against the induction standards, and, if successful, will be exempt from the requirement to complete induction. Please note both assessments must take place at the same time.
If you are an overseas trained teacher who would like to present yourself for assessment against the QTS standards or require further information regarding overseas trained teachers, you will need to contact the Teacher Training Agency overseas advice line: 01245 454 321 or alternatively you can email: OTT@ttainfo.co.uk
If you are overseas qualified teacher currently working in a Waltham Forest school you can contact the London North Consortium on 020 8411 4602, www.lonoco.co.uk or the North East London Partnership on 020 7536 7048 www.nelp.co.uk for further information on gaining QTS.
You can also be assessed and supported for gaining QTS through Henry Maynard Infants 2Schools Consortium. The process is as follows:
- Contact Kathryn Kabra at Henry Maynard Infants (020 8520 3142)
- Arrange a preliminary needs assessment meeting with Kathryn and a representative from the school.
- On the basis of the meeting recommendations will be made about next steps.
- You will need to complete an application form, and an approximate final assessment date will be set.
- You will need to compile files of evidence against all the standards for QTS (and induction if appropriate)
- Assessment and recommendation to the GTC will take place at the arranged time.
School commitment
- To ensure that the OTT is able to demonstrate ability to teach in 2 Key Stages (at least 2 weeks experience is required)
- To carry out formal observations against the standards for QTS.
- To provide cover to enable the OTT to carry out the requirements
