School Uniforms and Clothing

Many of the borough’s primary schools have a uniform. Usually this consists of ordinary school-wear plus a specific sweatshirt with the school crest or name. Guidance on acceptable school-wear is available in the school prospectus, which is available from the school in question.

All of the borough’s secondary schools have a school uniform and details of each school’s requirements are published in the school prospectus. Secondary schools may also have uniforms relating to games, physical education and practical subjects, e.g., science overalls.

Schools have details of where specific items may be purchased and there are specialist school-wear suppliers in local shopping centres. School-wear is also available in clothing retailers and supermarkets.

The Council do not have a scheme to support parents with the cost of school uniforms. The Council withdrew the Clothing Grant scheme in spring 2004. Parents with low incomes can get free school meals for their children if their income falls within the set limits.
